To be honest, that\u2019s the kind of mindset I live with every day.<\/p>\n

People who enjoy the TV show Bura Tamori<\/em> probably feel the same way.
If you\u2019re someone who loves terrain, natural phenomena, and history, then you\u2019re the kind of person who naturally finds joy in observing, sensing, and discovering the world on your own terms.<\/p>\n

One of the people I respect the most, Tamori-san, is someone who has mastered the art of \u201cliving through feeling\u201d\u2014observing, sensing, thinking, and savoring life with his whole being.<\/p>\n

That aside\u2014on my first proper day off in a while, I suddenly decided:

From 2001 to 2008, I actually worked in Katsuura for seven years as a thalassotherapy (marine therapy) therapist.
Recently, people have been saying, \u201cKatsuura is surprisingly cool in summer,\u201d but honestly\u2026
I lived there for seven years, and my memory is: \u201cNo, it was pretty hot!!\u201d (lol)<\/p>\n

So I decided to check it with my own feet.<\/p>\n

Switching on my \u201cexplorer mode\u201d\u2014this too is a form of retreat.<\/p>\n

Reading the Data: Why Is Katsuura Cool?<\/h3>\n

Of course, weather experts already have official, data-based explanations.
And yes, the official interpretation is correct. My theory is just a personal one.<\/p>\n

But modern people have a bad habit:
When we hear \u201cexperts say\u201d or \u201cthe data shows,\u201d we stop thinking for ourselves.
We stop asking questions. We stop checking things with our own senses.<\/p>\n

I prefer to ask:
\u201cWhy does the data say that? What\u2019s behind it?\u201d<\/p>\n

I remembered how hot it actually felt back then, and I didn\u2019t want to ignore that intuition.
Exploring things we\u2019re curious about\u2014this is such an important habit.<\/p>\n

Sure, we can look up anything instantly on our phones.
But if we stop feeling and stop checking with our own senses, we end up living a life ruled by academics, Google, and AI.<\/p>\n

I spotted a sign: \u201cCake Shop on the Hill.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well\u2026 it was<\/em> my day off. (lol)(lol)
I agonized over strawberry shortcake or melon shortcake, and in the end, I chose\u2026 both.

Temptations along the way aside, I arrived safely in Katsuura! The ocean was so blue!!<\/p>\n

But my destination wasn\u2019t the beach\u2014it was the Katsuura AMeDAS weather observation site<\/strong>, which records Katsuura\u2019s official temperatures.<\/p>\n

And here was my hypothesis:<\/p>\n

Maybe the AMeDAS station is simply located in a breezy spot\u2014
near the sea or in a place where the sea breeze shoots through (\u201cTitanic in the Mountains\u201d-style).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Back in my Katsuura days as a surfer, I went everywhere from Kujukuri to Tateyama based on wave conditions.
And honestly, anywhere along the outer coast:
\u201cIf the sea breeze blows, it\u2019s cool.\u201d
That\u2019s what my body remembers.<\/p>\n

But when I followed Google Maps to the AMeDAS location, it took me to\u2026 a liquor warehouse?
Not right.<\/p>\n

So I started asking around.
Even the local Chamber of Commerce staff said, \u201cIs there an AMeDAS around here?\u201d
They didn\u2019t know either.<\/p>\n

When I told them I came because \u201cKatsuura is said to be cool lately,\u201d
the woman at the counter laughed and said, \u201cIs it really cool?\u201d
\u201cNo!! It\u2019s super hot!!\u201d I answered instantly. (lol)<\/p>\n

From there, I walked around in the blazing sun to find the actual place.<\/p>\n

Eventually\u2026 there it was!!
AMeDAS equipment, right along the small Tonagawa River.<\/p>\n

Tonagawa is a very narrow river, with both sides reinforced by concrete\u2014almost like a mini canyon.<\/p>\n

A nearby restaurant was even named \u201cKaikaze\u201d (Sea Breeze).
That made me wonder:<\/p>\n

Could this river be a pathway channeling the sea breeze inland?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Walking downstream, I saw the river leads directly to the sea.<\/p>\n

The moment the sea breeze touched my cheek\u2014instant cooldown.
\u201cYep. Sea breeze = Katsuura becomes cool.\u201d
My theory didn\u2019t feel so off.<\/p>\n

Hypothesis 1: Sea Breeze \u201cValley Wind\u201d up the Tonagawa River<\/h3>\n

A small river can act like a tiny valley.
With concrete embankments on both sides, it might funnel the breeze inward with nothing blocking it.<\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t want to jump to conclusions.<\/p>\n

So I walked to the main intersection by Katsuura Station.<\/p>\n

Facing south, I could see the ocean on one side and the massive Hotel Mikazuki on the other.<\/p>\n

Here, the wind felt even stronger<\/em> than by the river.<\/p>\n

At the AMeDAS corner, the flags of the Katsuura Tantanmen shop were flapping wildly.
Definitely a strong sea breeze.<\/p>\n

But then I noticed something odd:
Two flags right next to each other were fluttering in different<\/em> directions.<\/p>\n

That shouldn\u2019t happen with a simple sea breeze.<\/p>\n

I watched closely:
The wind strengthened, weakened, shifted direction irregularly.<\/p>\n

And then\u2014after a few minutes:<\/p>\n

\u201cI got it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A quiet thrill ran through me.<\/p>\n

This unpredictable wind\u2026
It must be building wind<\/strong>\u2014generated by Hotel Mikazuki.<\/p>\n

Hypothesis 2: Sea Breeze + Building Wind from Hotel Mikazuki<\/h3>\n

The huge hotel structure could be funneling and compressing the breeze, sending a stronger rush of air toward the AMeDAS station.<\/p>\n

Hypothesis 3: A Combination<\/h3>\n

Sea breeze traveling up the Tonagawa \u201cvalley,\u201d
plus
building wind generated by Mikazuki\u2019s structure.<\/p>\n

That would explain the inconsistent flag movement perfectly.<\/p>\n

Finally, according to the meteorologists\u2019 official analysis,
the landform south of the AMeDAS site is a steep slope, making it easier for south-southwest winds to climb upward.<\/p>\n

That means:<\/p>\n

The AMeDAS site is basically a \u201cSea Breeze Titanic\u201d\u2014
where multiple streams of cool air converge and rise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course, this is just my personal theory from on-site observation.
For the official explanation, please refer to the meteorologists.<\/p>\n

What I really want to say is:<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t stop thinking just because \u201cexperts say so\u201d or \u201cdata proves it.\u201d
Stay curious.
Question the obvious.
Use your own feet and senses.
And when something clicks\u2014\u201cAh, this might be the truth!\u201d\u2014
that moment is priceless, beyond right or wrong.<\/p>\n
